The barriers that were requested by local people have now been put into place. There are replacement disabled bays on Victoria Road and Kenrick Street. Changes will be made to these after discussions with local disabled residents. The vast majority of cars that previously used the area as a rat run have disapeared.

A long running saga regarding the fence at Curzon Street has at long last been resolved. Local people asked us to get the Education Department to get the fence moved so that they could more easily get down their own street. We came across resistance from Corporate Property officers but we are glad so say that we have just received confirmation that the fence is to be moved.

Network Rail attended a meeting at Bakers Arch on Friday. We are pleased to say that they have made a committment to erect a safety/security fence at the top on the arch. This will greatly help local residents who have been the target of long standing vandalism from this railway bridge and help prevent what might have been a serious car crash if stones had eventually been thrown at moving vehicles travelling along Chandos Street/Emerys Road. We are very pleased that Network Rail has agreed to this action.
An 837 signature petition was submitted to the County Council on 7th September. Work continues to get improvements to pedestrian area near Coop. New barrier should be installed March/April

A petition is being carried out to put a barrier at the end of Chandos Street near the Coop. The area should be a pedestrianised area but it is more like a road for long periods of the day. We will be outside the Coop on Thursday 10th August and Friday 11th August 2006. Please sign up.

The promised cameras for near the Coop have been delayed until Autumn we were told this week. We are very dissapointed with this. We are trying to get a full expalnation for the delay

The conclusion of the work carried our by the Council is that enforcement through camera is the best possible solution. You can see an example of one of these high resolution cameras below. We will keep you informed about when these cameras will be installed and how they will be monitored.

The new B&Q store that opned that year is planning to close. When we have more information on the details we will let you know.
Further consultation is being called for by your local labour team on a future bridge which may bring greater traffic congestion and pollution to Netherfield.
A bridge across the River Trent, which many feel may never be built, would bring increased traffic to Netherfield and the surrounding areas. Few residents in Netherfield have actually heard of the bridge partly because its official name is the Radcliffe Bridge. The £100 million project aims to take traffic out of the City Centre area and increase access to the M1 for those in this part of Nottingham. The bridge was recently discussed at a public enquiry and a vote is due on the 10th of February to move the project along. The earliest that cars might be moving on such a bridge would be 15-20 years time.
The local Labour Team for Netherfield has followed the arguments carefully and believes that although the bridge may bring better access to the motorway residents in Netherfield should be consulted more widely. We are keen to hear your views on this issue. Please contact us. details.
A better rail service for Netherfield could considerably reduce the number of cars travelling through the area and reduce the rush hour congestion that Netherfield suffers every morning and evening.
The tram in Nottingham City has shown that innovative projects can get public support. We now feel that further investment needs to come from Government and County Council to serve the transport needs of Netherfield. Contact us to sign our petition. We will be taking our petition to the Minster for Transport Alistair Darling.
Gedling has more officers on high-visibility foot-patrols than any of the other local council and it is set to do more. Currently, thanks to Labour Action at Gedling Council (only belatedly and grudgingly supported by the Lib Dems and opposed by the Conservatives) we have a total of 12 PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers). Six are funded by the Home Office and six are paid for from your Council Tax. There are now also 4 Neighbourhood Wardens.
In the last couple of weeks the County Council has offered to match our spending for the next three years. This should mean that in the next few months we will have an additional 30 Officers on patrol compared to May 2003 , that is when Labour took control of the Crime Reduction Portfolio at Gedling.
The Tories opposed the action and the Lib Dems claimed it would never work.
Alan Milburn has officially opened the St George's Centre in Netherfield. He praised the hard work of Cllr. Alan Clarke who played a leading role in commissioning the £1 million building. The centre is used for a variety of Community uses including Sure Start, evening classes and a cafe with an inside and outside area.
